As someone with family in America, liberals’ enthusiastic adoption of guns in response to ICE freaks me out…
This affects the entire country.

I apologise for the rushed nature of this post, it started as a comment on a video about Liberals buying AR 15s to protect against a tyrannical government but I doubted I’d have any serious replies there and I’m sorry but I have to vent about this and I hope this is an appropriate space for this conversation.
I’m a French-American who lived in the US for close to a decade, and despite all its flaws, I have a lot of love for the US: there’s just one thing I have never been able to accept or understand. I was in High School in America when Sandy Hook happened and I learned the harsh lesson that no one gave a crap about my life or those of my classmates, because when President Obama cried at the thought of 6 year olds being gunned down, do you remember how the 2nd Amendment America answered?
“What a weak leader, crying on national TV.”
I DESPISE American gun culture. It’s the most disgusting instinct to think “the only way I can protect my life is by taking someone else’s” and I felt so so unbelievably unsafe when I lived there, I lived in California and New Mexico and there were a LOT of mass shootings happening while I was there. In fact my time in the US was marked by so many yearly massacres that I can’t remember most of the ones that happened between Sandy Hook (the first shooting I was old enough to be aware of) and Las Vegas (the one that convinced me I didn’t ever want to live in America again). Amongst other reasons, guns are really why I left the US, and I do not regret it: I know Europe isn’t perfect but when I hear a loud bang here my first thoughts are “construction site” “car crash” “fireworks”, and barely ever “was someone just shot?” and I feel so much safer. I also recognise that - as a duel citizen - I am very privileged to be able to do that, it’s easy for me to sit here in Europe and throw stones at an American problem: but I did the gun drills throughout middle and high school, and I have a niece in the US now who is doing Gun Drills in Primary School so I hope you understand I do care about this personally and this is not just some judgy European “ooh I don’t like the way you Yankees do stuff”, I genuinely care about American students feeling safe
Now don’t get me wrong: I get it, I’ve fired guns. A 2nd amendment buddy of mine took me to the range, and they’re fun as hell. And if I was facing down a fascist regime I’m sure I’d be singing a different tune but I mean what the fuck… You have overly-aggressive racists violently enforcing their “laws” down the barrel of a gun and the solution is for all the nervous, scared, and justifiably paranoid protesters and private citizens to go around toting fucking guns?! Oh I’m sure things will go great when the first panicked citizen (and again-no judgment on that, I’d panic too) tries to stop ICE by drawing on them. I’m sure anyone unlucky enough to be around ICE and an armed vigilante will be fine, bullets famously stop at their intended targets and definitely never hit bystanders… and then the response, Jesus, if you think things are bad now imagine what a perfectly wrapped gift it would be to the tyrant for one of his thugs to have been gunned down. He would go fucking ballistic …
