Unhouse me here
Every delay has consequences.
(Scott Johnson) You knew we were in trouble when “bums” became “homeless” and then “unhoused.” Aaron Sibarium reports on the manifestation of the euphemistic mentality in leftist governance in “‘We’re Not Criminalizing the Unhoused’: How a Homeless Encampment and Drug Dealers Are Destroying a Local Condominium Complex and Turning Its Residents’ Lives Upside Down” (“Prince George’s County, Md, is going to court to evict legal residents over damage allegedly caused by the camp”). He followed up in “Judge Orders Condo Residents Evicted As Squalid Homeless Encampment Wreaks Havoc.”
In the first story Sibarium reports:
The sign outside the Marylander Condominiums, a 200-unit complex in Prince George’s County, Md., describes it as a “private community.”
But for members of a homeless encampment in the condo’s backyard, the complex also serves as a crackhouse, a bathroom, and the entrance to an open-air drug market, which has become a magnet for organized crime and caused millions in property damage.
The details disgust. It is a horror show.
In his follow-up, Sibarium reports:
“We’re not criminalizing the unhoused,” police major Thomas Boone said of the encampment at a town hall in January, a statement that put an exclamation point on the reluctance of local law enforcement to deal with the problem.
The county will instead push hundreds of legal residents out of their homes.
Sibarium provided details of the horror show with Andrew Kolvet and Blake Neff.

I refer to leftist governance above. I should say the story is a case study in leftist “governance.”

Reading Aaron’s stories reminded me of the role of Prince George’s County law enforcement in the worst book I have ever read from cover to cover: Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehesi Coates. I wrote about Coates’s book in the City Journal column “An updated racial hustle.”
