Slack like me
Every delay has consequences.

(Scott Johnson) John Howard Griffin risked his health to darken his skin and report what it was like to be a black man in the Jim Crow South, circa 1959. He published the expanded version of the resulting Sepia magazine series as Black Like Me in 1961. I read it in the original 1962 paperback edition published by Signet Books. It made an impression on me and millions of other readers.

Griffin’s book comes to mind in connection with the clip of Gavin Newsom in which he seeks to impress a black audience in Georgia with limitations imposed by his dyslexia. He performed poorly on the SAT. He can’t read a speech. “I’m like you.”

Newsom remains the incumbent governor of California with aspirations for higher office. The video reveals a few interesting strands of his thought. Is this how to win friends and influence people in 2026?

Griffin quoted from “Dream Variations” by Langston Hughes in the epigraph from which he took the title of his book: “Night coming tenderly / Black like me.” Newsom changes it up: “Words looking shaky / Slack like me.”

Gov. Newsom to a black crowd in GA: "I am like you. I'm a 960 SAT guy. I can't read."
