Democrats react to Noem’s DHS ouster and Markwayne Mullin’s nomination
Same show, different day.
Democrats are taking to social media to rejoice over President Donald Trump‘s decision to fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
Trump announced Noem’s termination, effective March 31, on Thursday afternoon, tapping Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) as her replacement. Noem’s combative congressional hearings this week reportedly influenced the president, though she has been a target of Democrats since the start of her tenure at the helm of the administration’s immigration response on the homeland front.
“The president just fired Kristi Noem. Good riddance,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a video statement. “But the problems with DHS go much deeper than any one person. They’ve got to rein in ICE and end the violence.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) took Noem’s firing as an opportunity to push further for the ouster of Attorney General Pam Bondi, something several voices on the Left have called for.
“Kristi Noem is gone. Pam Bondi is next,” Jeffries said on social media. “Keep the pressure on these extremists.”

Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL), who has sparred with Noem since the DHS’s immigration surge in Chicago began in 2025, trolled Noem’s firing on X, posting an image of a fake LinkedIn profile for the secretary announcing her as “open to work.” Pritzker characterized Noem in the fake profile as “DHS Secretary (Former),” “Public Speaker,” and “Unlicensed Dog Euthanizer.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), a frequent maverick within the Democratic Party who called for Noem’s firing after the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good at the hands of federal immigration officers, said he is backing Mullin for the position.
“I’m not sure how many fellow Democrats will vote to support our colleague @SenMullin as the next DHS Secretary, but I am AYE,” Fetterman said in a post.

House Judiciary Committee Democrats blasted Noem’s legacy in a joint statement, given that her firing happened one day after their five-hour hearing with her.
