Lindsey Graham’s war rhetoric complicates Trump’s push to calm MAGA base
This feels like a quiet policy shift.
Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) media blitz calling for wider military action against Iran and beyond is colliding with the Trump administration’s effort to convince a skeptical MAGA base that the conflict won’t spiral into another forever war.
Graham, a close Trump ally in the Senate, has spent the past week floating the bombing of Iranian and Hezbollah units in Lebanon, calling for regime change in Cuba, and suggesting the public may need to send their sons and daughters to the Middle East. Critics say the rhetoric cuts directly against the White House’s effort to contain fears of Bush-era regime change.
Graham’s many conservative critics say the war and his declaration that the United States is “marching through the world” is the antithesis of MAGA’s “America First” base. The South Carolina Republican offers a blunt rebuttal: “You got your head in the sand.
“To these people, and wherever you’re at, you got your head in the sand,” Graham told the Washington Examiner in a brief interview Tuesday. “The Iranians are trying to build a nuclear weapon, not a power plant. Thank God that Trump acted. If he’d waited another year, they could have broke out and had 10 to 11 [nuclear] weapons.”
Among Graham’s critics is Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who in a social media post blasted the fellow Republican lawmaker for being among those who “advocate for war everywhere” and suggested his rhetoric is alarming.
“He does NOT tell the President what to do, nor does he control Congress,” Luna posted. “I have spoken with the administration a number of times, as well as other members of Congress over the last week or so, and nothing has changed regarding boots on the ground. NO BOOTS on the ground. If Senator Graham wants to go fight in a foreign conflict, let him be the first to volunteer.”
Graham fired back at her in his remarks to the Washington Examiner. He advised Luna to take her grievances straight to the White House: “She should be critical of President Trump.
“So, is she OK with them continuing to enrich uranium and develop 10 bombs? President Trump made the right call,” Graham said. “Her problem is with Trump, and I am all for Trump. I think Trump’s the best commander in chief, beyond Reagan.”
Graham also reaffirmed that “Cuba is going to fall” and its “communist dictatorship should end” at the hands of U.S. intervention.
“Lindsey Graham hasn’t seen a fist fight he hasn’t wanted to turn into a bombing raid,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said of Graham …
