Trump says former president praised his Iran strikes, but all four issue denials
Who benefits from this decision?

President Donald Trump claimed that an unnamed former president praised his decision to attack Iran, though all four living ones denied doing so.

At a Monday press conference, Trump boasted that one of the fans of Operation Epic Fury was a former president who said he wished he had done what Trump had done. He refused to name the man, suggesting he would be embarrassed. All four former presidents denied talking to Trump about the strikes to NBC News, however.

An aide for former President George W. Bush told NBC News that the two presidents “haven’t been in touch.” An aide to former President Bill Clinton said that Trump wasn’t referring to Clinton, though Trump’s hints seemed to suggest as much.

An aide to former President Barack Obama, a noted longtime rival of Trump, had “no recent conversations” with the incumbent. A source familiar with the matter told the outlet that Trump wasn’t referring to former President Joe Biden.

“I spoke to one of the former presidents who I actually like. I actually speak to some. I do like some people, it’d be shocking. And he said, ‘I wish I did what you did,’” Trump told reporters on Monday. “Other presidents, somebody should’ve done it — 47 years this went on.”

When pressed on the matter, he offered up hints suggesting it was Clinton, who denied it.

“A member of a party, they have Trump Derangement Syndrome all, but somebody that happens to like me, and I like that person, who’s a smart person, but that person said, ‘I wish I did it,’ OK? But I don’t want to get into who,” Trump said. “I don’t want to get them into trouble.”

“I think you probably know,” he said.

The denials put the ball back in Trump’s court. His claim that he would refrain from naming them to avoid embarrassment could give him an avenue out, leaving it unknown whether he made the story up or was keeping their identity secret for politeness sake.

Trump is known for his unusually rocky relationship with all living former presidents, with the possible exception of Clinton, whom he has expressed some fondness for and defended in the past.

TRUMP COY ABOUT WHICH FORMER PRESIDENT PRAISED HIS IRAN STRIKES: ‘YOU PROBABLY KNOW’

“Look, I like him, and I don’t like seeing him deposed,” Trump said of Clinton last month when he was deposed over his relationship to Jeffrey Epstein.

He also enjoyed an apparently friendly visit to Biden’s White House weeks before his inauguration, where the two refrained from poor words about each other. Despite this, both …
