  • House GOP Pressures Senate on ‘Talking Filibuster’ for SAVE Act
    What's the endgame here?

House Republicans are pressuring the Senate to employ a risky procedural maneuver to force a vote on election integrity legislation.

The SAVE America Act would institute national requirements of proof of citizenship to register to vote, as well as photo identification to vote in federal elections.

In recent days, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., has publicly urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., to force a “standing filibuster,” also known as a “talking filibuster,” in the Senate. This procedural maneuver could force Democrats to continue talking in order to stall the passage of bills, rather than just killing the bill by withholding their support indefinitely.

But Thune, a supporter of the SAVE America Act, has warned the approach would use up valuable floor time.

“We will vote on the SAVE Act, but… triggering a talking filibuster has ramifications, implications that I think everybody needs to be aware of,” Thune said.

An update regarding the SAVE (America) Act and Voter ID:
    — Anna Paulina Luna (@realannapaulina) February 4, 2026

The Daily Signal spoke to Republicans in both chambers of Congress who gave their opinion on the matter.

    The House

Rep. Greg Steube, R-Fla., is one House conservative with little reverence for the Senate filibuster. For most legislation in the Senate, 60 senators must vote to end debate in order for a bill to come to a final vote.

“The bottom line is the only way the SAVE Act passes is if the filibuster’s [overcome], whether it’s the standing filibuster or just doing away with it all together,” Steube told The Daily Signal.

With all due respect, these excuses aren’t going to cut it.

The American people rightfully expect our Republican Congress to DELIVER on our promises.

To do so, we must return to the talking filibuster and pass real, America First wins.

    Starting with the SAVE Act.
    — Rep. Andrew Clyde (@Rep_Clyde) February 3, 2026

Steube also revealed Luna was trying to get House Republican signatures on a letter to Senate Republican leadership to overcome the 60-vote threshold.

A spokesman for Luna did not respond to a request for confirmation of whether she was circulating a letter.

How Would the Talking Filibuster Work?

The idea of a talking filibuster is to enforce rule 19 of the Standing Rules of the Senate, which states, “no Senator shall speak more than twice upon any one question in debate on the same legislative day without leave of the Senate.”

Under the rule, Senate Republicans would refuse to adjourn and would force Democrats to talk in order to filibuster the bill. Once the Democrats ran out of speeches on the question of the bill, it would come to a vote and pass by a simple majority.

However, under this procedure, Democrats could use up hundreds of hours of floor time on just one legislative question.

Rep. Roy breaks down how Leader Thune can force a talking filibuster on the SAVE America Act, requiring Democrats to take the floor and explain to the American people why they oppose securing our elections.

  • Vance says Olympics is one of few things that ‘unites’ the country
This feels like a quiet policy shift.

Vice President JD Vance encouraged American athletes competing in the Winter Olympics in Milan on Thursday, saying, regardless of political parties, the entire nation is “rooting” for them.

Vance was joined by his wife, second lady Usha Vance, and their three children when he spoke to the athletes.

“The whole country, Democrat, Republican, independent, we’re all rooting for you and we’re cheering for you,” Vance said. “We know you all are going to make us proud and thank you all and hope you guys all have fun.”

The vice president is leading the U.S.’s delegation to the 2026 Winter Olympics.

At the opening ceremony on Friday, Vance will be joined by the second lady, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. Ambassador to Italy Tilman Fertitta.

This is the second lady’s first public appearance since announcing her pregnancy in January. The second family said they are expecting the birth of their fourth child, a boy, in July.

Vance said the second lady is not a sports fan, but throughout their entire relationship, she has made them watch the Olympics. The vice president’s family frequently joins him on trips.

“My wife, the second lady, is not a sports fan, but every year, I guess every two years, she obsessively makes us watch the Olympics and that’s been true since the moment I started dating her,” he said.

Vance said the ceremony is special because it “brings the country together,” including for those who are not major sports fans yet choose to tune in to the Olympics.

“You can tell by the ratings from the Olympics,” he said. “You can tell by the fact it really brings the country together. Everybody is rooting for you guys. We’re so excited to be here.”

Former Olympic gold medalists will also be joining the U.S. delegation at the opening ceremony, including speedskater Apolo Ohno, figure skater Evan Lysacek, and hockey sisters Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando.

Vance praised the athletes, adding that attending the Olympics is the “highlight” of his time as vice president.

“Personally, I’m amazed by the combination of excellence and hard work that it takes to get here,” he said. “I can’t imagine what you guys had to sacrifice, what your family had to sacrifice, so I hope you guys enjoy it.”

He is expected to later visit Armenia and Azerbaijan on this trip to show support and build on the peace agreement the White House brokered last year, ending a four-decadelong conflict between the two countries.

  • From protest to felony: the lines Minnesota anti-ICE agitators may be crossing
    Law enforcement shouldn't be political.

Federal prosecutors have charged more than 150 anti-ICE protesters in Minnesota with crimes ranging from obstruction of federal agents to FACE Act violations — offenses that carry penalties from fines to years in prison — as the Justice Department warns that similar conduct will be prosecuted aggressively nationwide.
The response in the state offers a roadmap of sorts for how the Justice Department could move to quash similar protests nationwide and respond to unrest during Trump’s second presidential term.
In Minnesota, more than 150 protesters have been arrested since the start of the Trump administration's immigration enforcement operation, "Operation Metro Surge," including protesters who interrupted a church service, and others who blocked, assaulted, or attempted to otherwise restrict ICE officers in the state. The administration's response to these protests could prove telling as it moves to deploy ICE officers to other states in the weeks and months ahead.
These individuals have been charged with FACE Act violations, conspiracy charges, and obstruction of federal agents, according to copies of criminal complaints and indictments reviewed by Fox News Digital. Convictions on any of these charges range from fines to years in prison, in a sign of the administration’s plans to crack down on similar protest tactics in other states.

"We expect more arrests to come," Attorney General Pam Bondi said on social media last week.
In fact, individuals need not look much further than indictments the Justice Department has already secured against certain individuals as an indication of the behavior and actions it may seek to prosecute.
Bondi last week announced the arrests of 16 Minnesota protesters for "allegedly assaulting federal law enforcement — people who have been resisting and impeding our federal law enforcement agents."  According to a criminal complaint published by the Justice Department, the alleged actions include the use of multiple vehicles to "box in" federal immigration officers; spitting on ICE officers during an arrest; attempting to throw a brick at an ICE officer; and other obstructive and violent actions.
One individual allegedly followed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents in his van before approaching their vehicle with a baseball bat in hand.

  • Noem deploys to both borders, says ICE won't be deterred by sanctuary officials who 'want to create conflict'
    Who's accountable for the results?

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem deployed to the northern and southern borders in a single day this week as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement across the country. Despite increased criticism following the shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota, Noem told Fox News Digital that the department would not be deterred by sanctuary politicians from doing the work of getting dangerous illegal aliens off the streets.
"I think people would want less conflict," Noem told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview in Nogales, Ariz., this week. "They also want to know that we're enforcing our laws and that we are going after dangerous criminals. And they don't want them to be released on the streets to perpetuate more crimes. So we're going to continue to do our work and follow through on what President Trump promised."
"We won't be deterred by local elected officials that just want to create conflict," the secretary added. "We’re going to continue to protect the American people and make sure that we have the opportunity to go after those dangerous illegal aliens and remove them."
The secretary's remarks come as border czar Tom Homan announced an immediate drawdown of 700 personnel from Minnesota, effective Wednesday. Homan cited improved cooperation with the jails, though 2,000 officers will still remain in the state. Homan stressed that a complete drawdown was the goal but said that was "contingent upon the end of illegal and threatening activities against ICE."
LEAVITT SAYS TRUMP WILL NOT ‘WAVER’ ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN DESPITE DEMOCRATIC BACKLASH
Anti-ICE agitators in Minnesota have been targeting street enforcement operations and demonstrations have escalated in the wake of the shootings of Good and Pretti. Good was killed by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during a confrontation on Jan. 7, and Pretti was shot by Border Patrol agents on Jan. 24 during an enforcement operation.
As Minnesota leadership has demanded federal immigration authorities leave the state, Noem painted the crackdown on illegal immigration as one aimed at protecting Americans, not creating political conflicts.
President Donald Trump rejected calls to fire Noem while addressing the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Thursday. He cited the "strongest border in the history of our country" in defending the secretary.

  • ‘Anti-ICE Antifa TERRORIST’ arrested in Minneapolis for threatening federal agents: DOJ
This looks less like justice and more like strategy.

Top Justice Department officials announced Thursday the arrest of a self-described “Anti-ICE Antifa TERRORIST” in Minneapolis who is charged with threatening to assault and kill federal immigration agents.

Federal authorities took 37-year-old Kyle Wagner into custody after prosecutors alleged he repeatedly posted violent threats against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on social media last month, encouraging followers to attack, “get your hands on” and even kill federal officers.

Photos from Thursday show Wagner being led out of a Minneapolis residential building by agents with Homeland Security Investigations — part of the Department of Homeland Security — wearing a sweatshirt that reads, “I’M ANTIFA!”

In announcing the arrest, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche directly labeled Wagner as an “Antifa TERRORIST.” Antifa is short for anti-fascist.

The Justice Department with @ICEgov HSI arrested a self-identified anti-ICE Antifa TERRORIST in Minneapolis today. Conspire and threaten to assault, kill and doxx officers, and you’ll find yourself in federal custody facing the full force of justice.
    — Todd Blanche (@DAGToddBlanche) February 5, 2026

“It’s no surprise that an antifa terrorist is allegedly threatening to kill and assault federal law enforcement officers as they dutifully remove criminal threats from neighborhoods,” Blanche said. “After all, this is what antifa is about: lawlessness and violence. But under the leadership of President [Donald] Trump and Attorney General Bondi, there is no safe haven for terrorists and no protection from the full weight of justice.”

Prosecutors say Wagner’s social media posts in January repeatedly referred to ICE officers as the “Gestapo” and “murderers” and called for physical confrontations with them. In a now-deleted Jan. 8 video, he stated: “we’re f***ing coming for you,” according to the criminal complaint.

Prosecutors allege subsequent posts urged followers to harass immigration officers, “cripple them,” and to “unmask and identify” agents.

Wagner also allegedly doxed an ICE supporter in Michigan and threatened the individual, a federal crime that can carry significant prison time.

  • Trump slams ‘moron’ Thomas Massie at prayer breakfast
    Be honest—this is ridiculous.

President Donald Trump lambasted Rp. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a frequent antagonist of his administration, as a “moron” while speaking at the 74th National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.

“He’s an automatic no,” Trump said of Massie’s tendency to vote against his administration. “No matter what. If we did welfare reform. If we did the greatest thing in history for religion. No matter what we did. No matter how good it is … we just did the greatest tax cuts in history, he voted against.”

“No matter what we do, this moron,” Trump added, drawing laughter. “No matter what it is.”

Massie, a libertarian conservative, has broken with the president on several occasions in the past year. The Kentucky Republican was an early proponent of releasing the Epstein files. Massie also supported Democratic efforts to curtail the president’s war powers regarding Venezuela. He also voted against Trump’s tax cuts, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

“There’s something wrong with him,” Trump said. “We call him Rand Paul, Jr. You know, it’s like they just vote no. They love voting no. They think it’s good politically, the guys polling about 9%, it’s not good.”

Massie quickly hit back on social media following the president’s remarks.

“The President of the United States called me a moron at the National Prayer Breakfast this morning because I’m still fighting for what he promised the American people: Reduce big spending, DOGE, no new wars, end foreign aid, defend 1A 2A 4A, prolife, and expose sex traffickers,” he wrote on X.

Trump is supporting a primary challenge to Massie this year. The president is urging the GOP to coalesce around Ed Gallrein, who is challenging Massie in the GOP primary.

TRUMP JOKES ABOUT NEEDING HELP FROM GOD DURING NATIONAL PRAYER BREAKFAST

“I have heard that there are other Candidates exploring a run for this seat, but I am asking all MAGA Warriors to rally behind Captain Ed Gallrein, the Candidate who is, far and away, best positioned to DEFEAT Third Rate Congressman Thomas Massie, a Weak and Pathetic RINO from the beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky, a place I love, and won BIG, ALL THREE TIMES,” he wrote on Truth Social last month.

Trump-aligned groups have also pledged to spend heavily to defeat Massie. The Kentucky Republican has beaten back a primary challenge each cycle since 2020.

  • Virginia Democrats agree to new map that gives Republicans just one seat
    Trust is earned, not demanded.

Virginia Democrats announced on Thursday that they agreed on a proposed congressional map that would include 10 Democrat-leaning seats and just one Republican-leaning seat.

Virginia lawmakers previously debated a similar Democrat-favoring map that had a 9-2 split. Both options reflect a strong shift from the current map, which has six Democratic and five Republican seats.

In the 2024 presidential election, Virginia voters supported former Vice President Kamala Harris with 51.8% of the vote compared to 46.1% for President Donald Trump.

In an X post, Virginia Senate President Pro Tempore Louise Lucas, a Democrat, announced that the 10-1 map secured the 21 votes needed to pass the state Senate. Another photo posted on X showing Lucas next to Democratic Virginia House Speaker Don Scott said the two bodies agreed to a 10-1 map.

“Donald Trump knows he is going to lose the midterms, he knows it,” Lucas said after an agreement was reached.

The official map will be released on Friday, but it still needs voter approval in an April referendum.

A spokesperson for Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) said state elections officials have said the map will be used in the midterm elections, according to the Virginia Scope.

“The Governor’s priority has been upholding the integrity of Virginia’s elections,” the spokesperson said. “Her team has been working throughout this process to make sure any proposed map could actually be implemented on the quick timeline.”

The path forward is complicated, as legal challenges have already arisen in the redistricting efforts.

Last week, a Tazewell County Circuit Court judge ruled that the legislature’s constitutional amendment to redistrict the congressional map was improperly passed.

The judge said there were procedural errors in the special session used to advance it after the first of the two sessions to vote on the map occurred during early voting for the 2025 elections.

Democrats are appealing the decision, and the case could reach the Virginia Supreme Court.

If the appeal succeeds, voters may decide in the April 21 referendum whether to amend the state constitution to allow the legislature to redraw the map, possibly in time for the 2026 midterm elections.

In Virginia, establishing a partisan gerrymander necessitates a constitutional amendment through a ballot measure because the state’s congressional map is currently drawn by a constitutionally mandated independent commission. This legal process for bypassing independent …

  • Mayor Bass facing blowback over explosive report that she altered wildfire report to downplay city's role
    How is this acceptable?

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is under fire this week after a Los Angeles Times report claiming she successfully altered in her favor a critical after-action report on the devastating southern California wildfires that killed 31 people.
While Bass has repeatedly denied that she interfered with the report, the Los Angeles Times reports, citing two sources, that Bass was concerned about the city could be exposed to legal liabilities for its lack of preparedness and removed or softened language implicating the city.
One of the key changes, according to the Los Angeles Times, was altering details about failures to fully staff and deploy resources leading up to the fire, an issue that has drawn intense scrutiny over the past year.
The report cites a "Bass confidant" who said "the mayor didn’t tell the truth when she said she had nothing to do with changing the report."
SPENCER PRATT ENTERS LA MAYOR RACE, ACCUSES CURRENT LEADERSHIP OF 'CRIMINAL NEGLIGENCE' OVER FIRE RESPONSE
Bass, who has also drawn criticism for flying to Africa for an event days before the fire broke out despite hazardous conditions in the forecast and warnings about fire risks, has denied the accuracy of the reporting.
Still, widespread outrage has resulted both on social media and from politicians.
"There’s no moving forward until we get the answers and the people that are responsible are fired, and that includes the fire chiefs, the fire battalion chiefs, that includes the mayor, it includes anybody that had anything to do with this," reality TV star Spencer Pratt, running for mayor of Los Angeles, told Fox Los Angeles while standing next to the burnt remains of his Palisades home that was destroyed in the fire.
Businessman Rick Caruso, who unsuccessfully ran for mayor against Bass is said to be mulling another run, called the report an "outrage" and that Bass "actively covered up a report meant to examine the most significant disaster in Los Angeles history."
TRUMP BYPASSES CALIFORNIA'S 'NIGHTMARE' BUREAUCRACY TO UNLOCK $3.2B FOR WILDFIRE SURVIVORS
More than a year after a series of the most expensive and devastating wildfires tore through the Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods of Los Angeles, survivors are still stuck in limbo as red tape, rising costs and stalled aid slow recovery. California’s strict rebuilding regulations, combined with the scale of the devastation, help explain why rebuilding has barely begun.
