  • Alexei Navalny’s widow demands ‘accountability’ for Putin after European leaders say husband was poisoned
    This is performative politics again.

Five European governments on Saturday announced their investigation determined Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned, contradicting Moscow’s claims he died of natural causes.

The United Kingdom, Sweden, France, Germany, and the Netherlands said they “are confident” Navalny was poisoned by epibatidine, a toxin found in poison dart frogs in South America. Officials said in a joint statement that they came to the conclusion based on analyses of samples from Navalny, who died in February 2024 while imprisoned at an Arctic penal colony in Russia.

The development appears to confirm accusations from Navalny’s widow and others that he was murdered by Russian authorities seeking to eliminate a threat to President Vladimir Putin. In a speech reacting to her husband’s death during the Munich Security Conference two years ago, when his death was announced, Yulia Navalny called for Putin “to be punished.”

This week, Yulia Navalny was again attending the Munich conference when the news broke that European leaders formally attributed her husband’s death to poison, a conclusion she said last fall was determined by two lab analyses. U.K. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper met with the widow on the sidelines of the German conference on Saturday, saying that “only the Russian government had the means, motive and opportunity to deploy this lethal toxin against Alexei Navalny during his imprisonment in Russia.”

“Today, beside his widow, the U.K. is shining a light on the Kremlin’s barbaric plot to silence his voice. Russia saw Navalny as a threat. By using this form of poison the Russian state demonstrated the despicable tools it has at its disposal and the overwhelming fear it has of political opposition,” Cooper said.

Yulia Navalny said in a statement to X that she “was certain from the first day that my husband had been poisoned.”

“Now there is proof: Putin killed Alexei with chemical weapon,” she said. “I am grateful to the European states for the meticulous work they carried out over two years and for uncovering the truth. Vladimir Putin is a murderer. He must be held accountable for all his …

  • Trump says dinner with Bill Maher was a ‘waste of time’
    Transparency shouldn't be controversial.

President Donald Trump ripped comedian and late-night host Bill Maher on Saturday, saying Maher was a “jerk” who had “zero confidence” during their White House dinner almost a year ago.

Trump took to Truth Social to express his outrage at the comedian in a nearly 500-word post, following Maher’s referencing the dinner in a recent interview that aired on CNN International.

“Sometimes in life you waste time,” Trump said. “He was extremely nervous, had ZERO confidence in himself and, to soothe his nerves, immediately, within seconds, asked for a ‘Vodka Tonic.’”

TRUMP VOWS TO PRESENT ‘IRREFUTABLE’ LEGAL ARGUMENT TO REQUIRE VOTER ID WITHOUT CONGRESS

The dinner was set up between Trump and Maher through a mutual friend when Maher inquired about meeting with the president, according to Trump. The president added that during the meeting, Maher admitted that he was “scared.”

Trump said they had a “great dinner,” and that Maher was very “respectful” about the president following their meeting until the comedian devolved into the “same old story.”

“Very boring [show], ANTI TRUMP, no mention of the PERFECT Border, Lowest Crime in 125 years, the Mass Removal of Stone Cold Criminals,” Trump said, as he went on to list various achievements from his administration. “In any event, it was a total waste of time for me to have this jerk at the White House.”

Trump also labeled Maher as a “highly overrated LIGHTWEIGHT.”

SALENA ZITO: MISSING THE STORY BETWEEN THE LINES

“Fortunately, his Television Ratings are so low that nobody will learn about his various Fake News statements about me,” Trump said. “He is no different than Kimmel, Fallon, or Colbert but, I must admit, slightly more talented!”

“Republicans should stop using him to show how the Left is coming over our way — Our Base, the Greatest of All Time, laughs at your weakness when you do it,” he added.

Following their April dinner, Maher said Trump was “gracious.”

“The guy I met is not the guy who the night before the dinner shit-Tweeted a bunch of nasty crap about how this dinner was a bad idea and what a deranged asshole I was,” Maher said. “Just for starters: He laughs. I’ve never seen him laugh in public. But he does, including at himself. He’s not fake.”

During his interview with CNN International, Maher said the people who stopped watching his show after his dinner with Trump were “idiots.”

  • UK sending its largest warship to Arctic to deter Russia
    Every delay has consequences.

The United Kingdom is deploying its largest warship to the Arctic in order to deter Russian aggression in the region, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced.

The HMS Prince of Wales, the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carrier, will be sent to the North Atlantic and Arctic regions sometime this year, Starmer said at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

The deployment, dubbed “Operation Firecrest,” will include multiple warships, F-35 jets, helicopters, and eventually joint exercises with U.S., Canadian, and Northern European forces. The carrier will also host U.S. fighter jets when it arrives at a U.S. port, according to the U.K. Defense Ministry.

Starmer billed the deployment as “a powerful show of our commitment to Euro-atlantic security,” a statement that comes after significant criticism from President Donald Trump of NATO’s defense capabilities in the region, which he has deemed inadequate to deal with Russian and Chinese threats.

Those near-constant rebukes threatened to fracture the U.S.’s relationship with Europe, especially as Trump flirted with a military takeover of Greenland, the Arctic island owned by Denmark.

The tensions have since simmered after a framework for a deal on the island was agreed to by Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte last month, and as NATO surges military assets to the region.

Earlier this week, NATO launched an effort increasing its defense capabilities in the Arctic. Called “Arctic Sentry,” the mission will include a series of military drills to address the threats Russia and China pose to the region’s security.

RUBIO BREAKS WITH VANCE IN TONE OF MUNICH ADDRESS AND TELLS EUROPE ‘WE BELONG TOGETHER’

The U.K. Defense Ministry indicated that “Operation Firecrest” would be working in tandem with that effort.

“With growing concern over Russian operations in the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap and the increased risk to critical undersea cables and pipelines, the deployment will send a clear message that the UK will always defend its waters, protect critical infrastructure, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its Allies,” it said in a statement.

  • Pentagon policy chief rejects US as ‘great empire’ in Munich push for ‘stability model’
    Who benefits from this decision?

Undersecretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby said the United States is not looking to “boss” other nations around, and is instead pressing ahead with a more “realistic” foreign policy agenda.

“We’re not looking to boss everybody around. We’re not looking to become this great empire of the world. We’re saying we want to have a favorable balance of power where countries can chart their own future,” he said at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday.

The “America First” strategy is one of “common sense,” Colby contended, saying the pragmatic vision extends to countries such as China, which the administration is “looking at in a clear-eyed way, with the goal of a favorable balance of power and stability.”

“We’re not communists in the Trump administration,” he said. “But it’s also not our job to say what the government of China is.”

Instead, Colby pushed for a “stability model,” where the U.S. ups its military as a deterrence and allies take ownership in respective regions, including by stepping up defense spending and incentivizing foes against forming alliances countering NATO. It’s similar to the foreign policy philosophy Colby espoused when he unveiled the U.S. vision for a “NATO 3.0″ to replace “NATO 2.0” in response to changing world dynamics earlier this week.

“We’re saying, let’s all be in a place where we’ve got a good buffer of assurance,” Colby said. “And of course, the Americans are going to be everywhere, but we’re going to be doing it in a way that’s linked to practical military planning. And then the other side, or whatever, those other powers are all going to see that, and they’re going to say, ‘Today’s not the day. I’m better off going with that stability model that we’re all about, where it’s better to keep jaw-jawing, rather than more warring.’”

Colby said he sees foreign policy similar to running a business, with partners expected to pull their weight in operations and funding. He praised European leaders for increasing defense spending in recent months and expressed optimism at what he’s hearing from NATO partners at the Munich summit, suggesting “momentum” is building in the administration’s favor. Earlier this week, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told attendees that they need to step up internal partnerships and decrease “excessive dependency” on the U.S., urging them to build a “strong, self-supporting European pillar.”

“Overall, the frame was, I would say, from him, was very much leaning in and saying, ‘Let’s get …
