  • We Found More Than 40 Cases of Immigration Agents Using Banned Chokeholds and Other Moves That Can Cut Off Breathing
    Every delay has consequences.

Immigration agents have put civilians’ lives at risk using more than their guns.

An agent in Houston put a teenage citizen into a chokehold, wrapping his arm around the boy’s neck, choking him so hard that his neck had red welts hours later. A black-masked agent in Los Angeles pressed his knee into a woman’s neck while she was handcuffed; she then appeared to pass out. An agent in Massachusetts jabbed his finger and thumb into the neck and arteries of a young father who refused to be separated from his wife and 1-year-old daughter. The man’s eyes rolled back in his head and he started convulsing.

After George Floyd’s murder by a police officer six years ago in Minneapolis — less than a mile from where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot and killed Renee Good last week — police departments and federal agencies banned chokeholds and other moves that can restrict breathing or blood flow.

But those tactics are back, now at the hands of agents conducting President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign.

Examples are scattered across social media. ProPublica found more than 40 cases over the past year of immigration agents using these life-threatening maneuvers on immigrants, citizens and protesters. The agents are usually masked, their identities secret. The government won’t say if any of them have been punished.

In nearly 20 cases, agents appeared to use chokeholds and other neck restraints that the Department of Homeland Security prohibits “unless deadly force is authorized.”

About two dozen videos show officers kneeling on people’s necks or backs or keeping them face down on the ground while already handcuffed. Such tactics are not prohibited outright but are often discouraged, including by federal trainers, in part because using them for a prolonged time risks asphyxiation.

We reviewed footage with a panel of eight former police officers and law enforcement experts. They were appalled.

This is what bad policing looks like, they said. And it puts everyone at risk.

“I arrested dozens upon dozens of drug traffickers, human smugglers, child molesters — some of them will resist,” said Eric Balliet, who spent more than two decades working at Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol, including in the first Trump administration. “I don’t remember putting anybody in a chokehold. Period.”

“If this was one of my officers, he or she would be facing discipline,” said Gil Kerlikowske, a longtime police chief in Seattle who also served as Customs and Border Protection commissioner under President Barack Obama. “You have these guys running around in fatigues, with masks, with ‘Police’ on their uniform,” but they aren’t acting like professional police.

Over the past week, the conduct of agents has come under intense scrutiny after an ICE officer in Minneapolis killed Good, a mother of three. The next day, a Border Patrol agent in Portland, Oregon, shot a man and woman in a hospital parking lot.

Top administration officials rushed to defend the officers. Speaking about the agent who shot Good, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said, “This is an experienced officer who followed his training.”

  • Firebrand vs. pastor: Jasmine Crockett and James Talarico to collide in Texas primary debate
    Trust is earned, not demanded.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett‘s viral, confrontational style will square off against state Rep. James Talarico‘s softer, faith-driven approach on Saturday when the duo meet for the first Democratic primary debate of the U.S. Senate race in Texas.

The side-by-side showdown between the millennial candidates will give national Democrats and Lone Star voters an early look at which style of politics could be more electable ahead of the start of early voting on Feb. 17.

Crockett has gone viral and grabbed national headlines for fiery exchanges and spats with former GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Elon Musk.

“She’s going to be better off being who she has been, not hoping to come up with some augmented version designed for this particular occasion,” a Texas Democratic strategist, whose spent 30 years enmeshed in the state’s politics, told the Washington Examiner. “The challenge for her is that she basically only exists in snippets online.”

Talarico, a former sixth-grade teacher and seminary student with 1.2 million TikTok followers, has pitched himself as a more measured, faith-focused alternative who can win over moderates and independents.

“You’re not going to convince him he’s a bad dude,” said the Texas strategist. “And so don’t try.”

DEMOCRATS FRET JASMINE CROCKETT MAY BE A TOUGH SELL STATEWIDE IN TEXAS

There have been few consistent polls in the race. One conducted earlier this month by Emerson College with Nextstar found Talarico up by 9 percentage points. Another poll conducted by Texas Southern University in December found Crockett up by 8 percentage points.

National attention has yet to focus on the race. That’s why Saturday’s debate presents an opportunity for both candidates to not just garner attention but also show that their style is what’s needed to flip the seat.

“I expect James Talarico to remain controlled and substantive, while Jasmine Crockett may be more inclined to seek moments that generate headlines,” a national Democratic strategist told the Washington Examiner. “Against the backdrop of ongoing questions about her viability in a general election and Talarico’s meteoric rise on the national stage, I could easily see her using that to create contrast.”

It’s unlikely, though, that those watching the debate will see it devolve into an outright slug fest, at least from Talarico.

  • When explaining economic disparities, should culture be treated as an independent cause, or as something shaped by long-term structural conditions?
    This isn't complicated—it's willpower.

I often see “culture” used to explain economic disparities, but it’s not always clear what causal role people mean. On one hand, culture is sometimes described as an independent set of values or behaviors that produces outcomes regardless of environment. On the other hand, culture can also be understood as something that develops in response to long-term structural conditions such as housing access, labor markets, education systems, and exposure to state power.
I’m interested in how people distinguish between these two explanations in practice. If culture is treated as a root cause, what evidence shows that it forms independently of historical and structural constraints? If culture is treated as a response, how should it factor into explanations of present-day economic outcomes?
I’m not trying to rank groups or assign blame, but to understand how causality is being framed and what assumptions are being made when “culture” is mentioned.

  • Trump administration messaging on ICE at odds with public support
Am I the only one tired of this?

As President Donald Trump’s administration doubles down on its aggressive immigration enforcement agenda, new polling data shows public approval for Immigration and Customs Enforcement has plummeted to new lows.

The Democratic Congressional Progressive Caucus has taken advantage of the waning public support, making the “abolish ICE” movement a pillar in its 2026 legislative platform — vowing to block all Department of Homeland Security funding until meaningful reforms are enacted.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem has remained a staunch defender of the agency’s tactics, stating that federal agents have “been serving [their] country [their] entire life” and describing pushback from local leaders and media as “reckless behavior.”

“President Trump and I will always stand with you. Please take some time today to thank an officer or agent today,” Noem said in a news release Jan. 9, Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. “Make them a meal, buy them a cup of coffee, or simply thank them. To every officer who puts on the badge each day: thank you. Your service is paramount to our nation’s safety.”

The shift in public sentiment comes amid the massive federal immigration enforcement campaign known as “Operation Metro Surge,” which deployed approximately 2,000 federal officers to cities such as Minneapolis.

Tensions reached a boiling point following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by ICE officer Jonathan Ross after Good struck Ross with her SUV, causing internal bleeding.

The killing has sparked national protests and a fierce public clash between Minnesota leadership and the Trump administration over ICE’s presence.

Support dropped when campaign promises became enforcement

Recent data from the Economist and YouGov shows a hard shift in how the public views federal immigration officers.

According to mid-January 2026 polling, 46% of respondents support abolishing ICE, a staggering increase from March 2025, when polling showed only 8% of respondents supported eliminating ICE.

As the administration moves beyond its more than 150,000 arrests, 47% of the public believes the agency is making the country less safe.

While the exact cause of the shift in public opinion is unknown, Roberto Suro, a professor of journalism and public policy at the University of Southern California, argued the backlash stems from a campaign promise by Trump that has been carried out far differently than originally pitched to voters.

“The predominant image is of these big, burly masked men …

Two decades ago this spring, I was furiously pounding out the manuscript to “Invasion,” my very first book on the systemic failures of immigration enforcement in America. On April 29, 2002, as if to underscore the bloody consequences of open borders that I had been compiling, a violent illegal alien repeat criminal offender named Jorge Arroyo (aka Armando) Garcia assassinated Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy David March during a routine traffic stop in Irwindale, California.

Garcia had been thrice-deported back to Mexico, twice-convicted for felony drug dealing and weapons violations, and was under investigation in two separate attempted murder cases when Deputy March pulled him over for a broken front light while on morning patrol. Despite federal law requiring criminal prosecution for illegal reentry into our country, serial invader Garcia never faced any action by the then-Immigration and Naturalization Service or the U.S. Attorney’s office in Los Angeles to kick him out and keep him out. The career lawbreaker was working illegally as a cook at a Mexican restaurant on Deputy March’s …

  • Left-Wing Late-Night Propaganda Isn’t ‘News’
    This deserves loud pushback.

The biggest joke on television is the idea that late-night hosts are “doing news.”

Yet, from a legal viewpoint, that has been the position of the networks—that when Jimmy Kimmel hosts Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., for a softball interview to announce his bid for governor of California, it’s “bona fide news” rather than Pravda-style propaganda.

President Donald Trump’s Federal Communications Commission chairman—Brendan Carr—is calling out the truth of the matter in a new official announcement that puts the networks on notice he will no longer tolerate their abuse of the FCC’s news exemption.

Carr, who has earned a reputation as a no-nonsense boss at the FCC, is acting to realign policy with reality: that daytime and late-night entertainment shows are just entertainment.

They’re not news, and they don’t deserve to be treated as such.

The “public notice” from the FCC’s Media Bureau—a sort of early-warning alert for potential future enforcement actions—tells broadcasters that “late night and daytime talk shows” are not automatically “bona fide news,” and says the “FCC has not been presented with any evidence that the interview portion of any late night or daytime television talk show program on air presently would qualify for the bona fide news exemption.”

Translation: Watch out, Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and ABC’s “The View,” because you no longer get the kid-glove treatment from the FCC when you muck around with left-wing politicians.

Carr is 100% correct: It’s not what Congress enacted. Congress specified bona fide news, the notice explains, for a reason—Congress was “concern[ed] that broadcast stations would apply the exemptions too broadly in service of a political agenda.”

It’s hard to see anything other than a political agenda at work when you look at the 2025 guest list on “The View”: Sens. Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Amy Klobuchar, John Fetterman, Cory Booker, Raphael Warnock, and Bernie Sanders, just to name a few (all Democrats).

Only one Republican was invited on the show—retiring Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. The same could be said of late-night shows: CBS’ Colbert featured 31 partisan officials in 2025, all Democrats, and Kimmel had on 11—again without a single Republican elected official.

    That isn’t news, it’s propaganda.

And, as the FCC warns in its notice, the airwaves cannot be used for programs “designed for the specific advantage of a candidate.” That presumption is hard to maintain with a straight face in light of these statistics, and doubly so when the hosts are sponsoring fundraisers or making max-out contributions to the candidates they are then interviewing for “the news.”

Indeed, ABC doesn’t even seem to consider Kimmel part of ABC News or he’d be prohibited by company policy from showering tens of thousands of dollars on Democrat candidates and PACs.

Television and radio networks broadcast are on public airwaves, and use of that public asset comes with certain responsibilities.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a body of politicians, Congress has paid particular attention to equal time rules for candidates to ensure that the airwaves are not twisted into a tool for just one side of a …

  • Is there any evidence whether anti-US extremist groups/actions/sentiments are growing or shrinking at the moment?
    This affects the entire country.

Given the recent, significant changes to US foreign policy, is there any hard evidence to show a change in extremist activity towards the US (e.g. increased or decreased terrorist group membership)?
Being a citizen and resident of a Western middle-power, most rhetoric I am seeing is that US action is upsetting former close allies and governments, and non-US aligned nations are being disrupted at varying levels by economic actions and deportations. However little is said on changes to non-governmental, extremist group attitudes with anti-US sentiment.

  • ‘Loyal soldier’: A day on the trail with JD Vance, Trump’s ‘human Swiss Army Knife’
    Who's accountable for the results?

Marine. Yale graduate. Calls the Rust Belt home with his beautiful, growing, mixed-race family. On paper, Vice President JD Vance ticks all the boxes for what the next generation of politics could look like.

But 2028 is a long way off. First, Republicans have to face the midterms, where the Trump administration’s record will be tested in a string of governors’ races and contests that could either salvage or eviscerate the party’s razor-thin congressional majorities.

For Vance, affectionately dubbed the “human Swiss Army Knife” by White House aides, that means hitting the road and hitting it hard to sell President Donald Trump’s agenda.

WHITE HOUSE SAYS MINNESOTA DEMOCRATS ARE ‘INCITING INSURRECTION’ AFTER ‘TERRORIST TRIED TO ASSASSINATE’ OFFICERS

“When people are aware of some of the things that we’ve done, and they connect them to administration policies, they’re much more likely to vote Republican,” Vance told the Washington Examiner in an interview aboard Air Force Two.

The Washington Examiner shadowed Vance in Ohio and Minnesota on Thursday, a two-state deployment that doubled as a test run for the message Republicans hope will carry them through 2026.

First, in Toledo, the vice president honed the White House’s shifting message on affordability, a top-line issue for voters in competitive races across the country. Next, in Minneapolis, Vance met with immigration officials effectuating Trump’s deportation agenda and held a press conference with, largely hostile, local media outlets.

Together, the stops captured the two issues dominating the national conversation: cost of living and immigration.

Despite the frigid temperatures on the ground — it was minus-two in Minneapolis by the time Vance departed for Washington — the vice president eschewed gloves, scarves, and headwear during the trip. Whether the native-Ohioan felt perfectly comfortable braving the elements or was trying to project strength for the cameras, his aides, many of whom also hail from the Buckeye State, clearly weren’t enjoying the winter climate.

THE INSIDE STORY OF HOW JD VANCE ‘LANDED THE PLANE’ ON TRUMP’S TIKTOK DEAL

One White House official, holding his gloved hands over his exposed ears while waiting on the tarmac in Ohio, turned to the press and joked, “Confirming on background: it is frigid.” Two other aides were pressed into assistance to kick open the rear door on Air Force Two, which had completely frozen solid, during the flight from Toledo to Minneapolis. …

  • I think that this is the clearest video of the Minneapolis ICE shooting that I've seen so far...
    Who's accountable for the results?

    What we apparently do know:
The subject was shot by ICE.
The subject was armed with a loaded handgun.
Even with a video that's more clear than others, in my view, it's not clear exactly what occurred here. I hope that the agents' body worn camera footage is released soon.
