  • (What’s Left of) Our Economy: Waiting for Tariff-Led Inflation is Looking Like Waiting for Godot
We're watching the same failure loop.

With today’s official report on U.S. consumer inflation, it’s hard to avoid thinking of Trump tariff critics as characters in that famous Samuel Beckett play.  Like Estragon and Vladimir who’ve been Waiting for Godot – “an enigmatic figure” who these tramps hope “will change their lives for the better” – these free trade zealots keep waiting and hoping for the president’s levies to boost Americans’ living costs notably.

And although I’m not saying that, like Godot, that turn of events will never come, it seems instructive that since the import duties began in earnest with “Liberation Day” last April, it’s difficult to find confirmations of their forecasts of surging inflation.  In fact, when you look underneath the hood of the Census Bureau’s latest release (for December), there’s some evidence that, as the post-Liberation Day months have worn on, the apparently tariff-induced price increases that have been seen have slowed to a crawl.

Indeed, by some key measures, living costs have been rising more slowly so far under Trump 2.0 than they have during the comparable, pre-tariff months of Joe Biden’s final year in office.

Sure, since April, Mr. Trump’s tariff rates have oscillated considerably and some have come down.  But estimates like this one still peg what they call the average effective rate at north of 11 percent – the highest since 1943.

And yet, on an annual basis, the headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) was up just 2.65 percent in December.  That was the best such figure since May’s 2.38 percent.

The core inflation results strip out food and energy costs because they’re supposedly volatile for reasons having little to do with the economy’s underlying vulnerability to inflation.  They, too, rose year-on-year in December by 2.65 percent, but that read was the weakest since the 1.65 percent recorded back in March, 2021.

As for those Biden-Trump results, during the president’s second term (from his first full month in office through December), headline CPI was up 1.96 percent.  That’s encouraging because the inflation target for the Federal Reserve (the U.S. government’s main inflation-fighting body) is two percent annually (according to a separate living cost measure).  For the same months during the Biden administration in 2024, it rose by 2.12 percent.

The core numbers look even better for the president.  So far during Trump 2.0, they’ve increased by 1.96 percent.  That’s much lower than the 2024 Biden figure of 2.45 percent.

But what about the figures since Liberation Day?  From April through December of last year, headline CPI climbed by 1.78 percent.  That’s faster than the 1.47 percent during the comparable Biden 2024 months, but the gap has narrowed since November (1.47 percent versus 1.10 percent).

Ditto for the core.  Since Liberation Day, it’s advanced by 1.66 percent as opposed to the comparable 2024 pace of 1.79 percent.  But here the gap narrowed as well.  Those numbers were 1.58 percent and 1.42 percent, respectively.

Many economists look at a goods grouping called “Commodities less food, energy, and used vehicles” as a good broad proxy for tariffed products.  But there’s no sign of noteworthy …

  • Federal judge questions Trump authority on White House ballroom project
This looks less like justice and more like strategy.

As President Donald Trump aims to build a ballroom at the White House, federal Judge Richard Leon on Thursday reportedly asked Justice Department lawyers to point to what authority allows the president to engage in a construction project at the White House.
"Where do you see the authority for the president to tear down the East Wing and build something in its place?" the judge asked, according to The Washington Post.
While the outlet reported that Leon said he could issue a decision next month, NBC News reported that the judge promised that he would issue a decision in February.
WHITE HOUSE RESPONDS TO REPORTS TRUMP NAMED NEW BALLROOM AFTER HIMSELF
Attorney Thad Heuer, who represents the National Trust for Historic Preservation, contended that the president lacks the constitutional power to rip down the East Wing and build a ballroom, according to NBC News, which quoted Heuer as saying, "He's not the owner."
The outlet reported that the judge seemed to be leaning in the direction of pausing the project.
Fox News Digital reached out to the White House on Friday.
WHITE HOUSE SAYS EAST WING DEMOLITION WAS NECESSARY DUE TO STRUCTURAL ISSUES
"The president didn’t want $400 million in taxpayer money to be used for this," Justice Department attorney Yaakov Roth said, according to NBC News.
"He wanted to use donations," Roth noted.
The project began last year at the behest of Trump, but he has asserted that it is being funded by private donations, not taxpayer dollars.
WARREN-LED INQUIRY DRAWS NEW DETAILS ON TRUMP BALLROOM DONATIONS FROM MAJOR CORPORATIONS
"I am honored to be the first President to finally get this much-needed project underway — with zero cost to the American Taxpayer!" Trump declared in an October Truth Social post. "The White House Ballroom is being privately funded by many generous Patriots, Great American Companies, and, yours truly. This Ballroom will be happily used for Generations to come!"

  • Dems blasted for trying to ‘deport’ ICE from swing county over ‘blood money’ rent
    This affects the entire country.

A swing-district congressman is firing back at officials in his Pennsylvania county who called a press conference Thursday to demand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to be "evicted" from county buildings while questioning the "legitimacy" of federal law enforcement.
Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-Pa., told Fox News Digital that Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, officials were wrong to try to boot ICE from office space in the county — where he said federal immigration enforcement already have arrested numerous illegal immigrants convicted of theft and violent crimes, including indecent assault on a minor.
But, county controller Mark Pinsley and newly elected Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, executive Josh Siegel saw it differently, after headlining a press conference Thursday to demand ICE leave the area — with Siegel referring to the reported rent arrears as "blood money."
The county is demanding immediate payment of "unpaid rent" to the amount of $115,000 and "termination of all negotiations with DHS," the Department of Homeland Security, according to information provided by a representative for Pinsley.
SEN JOHN FETTERMAN CALLS FOR DEMOCRATS TO 'RESIST' ADVOCACY OF 'EXTREME' STANCES LIKE ABOLISHING ICE
"Politics should never get in the way of allowing law enforcement to do its job. Instead of negotiating in good faith with (Homeland Security Investigations), Mr. Pinsley has chosen to attack an office that — I’m sure he knows — works to investigate human trafficking and other serious threats," Mackenzie told Fox News Digital.
"This dispute isn’t about rent, it’s about far-left politics — something that was made clear when the County Executive announced that he didn’t want DHS’ ‘blood money’."
The county’s seat, Allentown, Pennsylvania, is the third-largest in the state behind Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
PITTSBURGH GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT PROMOTES 'TACTICAL' CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE TRAINING FOR RESIDENTS
Mackenzie said the move by county officials interferes with important criminal investigative work and that they "certainly don’t want to see radical officials sabotage federal law enforcement as they work to arrest predators, traffickers, and fraudsters," going on to refer to Siegel and Pinsley as "self-interested extremists."
Pinsley’s office accused ICE of never fully executing a lease agreement for use of offices — and that DHS purportedly occupied county-owned space for 38 months while not being mentioned in its leasing agreement.
"Lehigh County should not be in business with an agency whose actions create fear instead of safety," Pinsley said. "We can give them …

Maybe there’s a small glimmer of hope for the Left Coast after all. First, San Francisco voters recalled George Soros-funded district attorney and crime-enabler Chesa Boudin. Now, even liberal Oregonians have kicked an East Coast media elitist to the curb and slapped “return to sender” on the carefully crafted package of Nicholas Kristof’s self-serving phony baloney.

Last October, the 63-year-old Kristof left his prestigious perch at The New York Times after nearly four decades to run for governor in the Beaver State, where he lived on a Yamhill farm from age 12 through high school graduation, a long, long, time ago. By February, his four-month fantasy stint as a Pacific Northwest political savior had come to a humiliating end when both state officials and the Supreme Court called bull on his preposterous claim of state residency. Last week, New York Nicky and the Times announced he was leaving Yamhill (or as I call it, Shamhill) and going back home — his real home — safely enveloped in the Grey Lady’s bubble, protected from truth and accountability.

  • George Conway enters crowded NYC Democratic House primary with singular focus — Trump
    Confidence requires clarity.

George Conway wants to impeach President Donald Trump. He may soon get a vote to do so.

The attorney, pundit and staunch anti-Trump critic formally launched his bid for a Manhattan House seat today and is framing his run around an all-encompassing effort to oppose the president.

The rollout includes a 2-minute video that features images of Jan. 6, a woman being led away by immigration enforcement officers and photos of Trump with Jeffrey Epstein and Vladimir Putin. In the video, Conway calls Trump “mendacious,” “corrupt” and “criminal.”

He pledges to “not be an ordinary member of Congress” given the extraordinary political moment.

In an interview with POLITICO, he went even further, saying that Trump’s actions in Venezuela — including the seizure of President Nicolás Maduro to face criminal charges in the U.S. — are among the impeachable crimes he’s committed.

“He completely disregarded the War Powers Act,” Conway said. “He’s abusing his power as commander-in-chief. Don’t get me wrong, Maduro is a bad guy and he’s probably guilty of all the crimes he’s been charged with in the Southern District of New York. But President Trump is doing this without consultation to Congress.”

The White House did not return a message seeking comment.

Conway is a first-time candidate who only recently registered as a Democrat ahead of filing to run in the deep blue district being vacated by Rep. Jerrold Nadler. A former Republican, Conway left the GOP in protest during Trump’s first term.

He'll face a large field of Democratic contenders, including state Assemblymember Alex Borres, New York City Council Member Erik Bottcher, former Nadler aide and state Assemblymember Micah Lasher and Kennedy scion Jack Schlossberg.

The seat is unlikely to be competitive in the November election, making the winner of the Democratic primary Nadler’s likely successor

Conway’s positioned himself as a forceful Trump antagonist — the kind of aggressive posture that’s popular with Democrats eager for a sharp-edged approach to take on the president. Conway and his wife Kellyanne, a former Trump adviser, announced in 2023 they would divorce.

His House campaign will test the limits of how much Democratic voters want to express their disdain for the president. Many candidates this year are placing a focus on affordability — a buzzy political issue that Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani rode to success in their campaigns.

Yet Conway believes voters’ concerns all flow from one source: Trump.

“The politics of this aren’t divided in my view between talking about Trump and holding Trump accountable and then all the kitchen table issues,” he said. “They’re not separate.”

Conway will still have to persuade Democratic primary voters, though. His recent conversion to the …

  • A New Entrant In the Race
    Transparency shouldn't be controversial.

(John Hinderaker) A vacant Senate seat is up for election in Minnesota this year, as the faceless and little-known Democrat Tina Smith is retiring. Peggy Flanagan, a far-left activist and our current Lieutenant Governor, is the favorite on the DFL side. Today my friend Michele Tafoya announced her candidacy as a Republican. Michele is a well-known sportscaster–Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, the Olympics, and much else–who has hosted a successful podcast for the last couple of years and has emerged as a conservative spokeswoman.

    This is her launch video:

For years, I walked the sidelines when the stakes were the highest, and that job taught me how leadership really works.

I’m running for U.S. Senate to bring that experience to Washington and deliver the real results Minnesota deserves.

    — Michele Tafoya (@Michele_Tafoya) January 21, 2026

Full disclosure: I have been urging Michele to run for office for several years. Because I run Minnesota’s leading 501(c)(3) nonprofit, I will not endorse or donate to anyone in the primary contests for governor or senator. I will only say that Michele is a friend, a solid conservative, and a welcome new face in Minnesota politics. And she is very good with a microphone in her hand.

  • How would this past year be any different or the same if Ron DeSantis were president instead of Trump?
What would you do if you ran things?

Even as Trump has become less popular among the public during the first year of his second term, it is difficult to untangle if the disapproval is about Trump's decisions personally or about Republican governance broadly. If Ron DeSantis had been elected president instead of Trump, defeating Harris in 2024, and he had largely pursued a conservative governing agenda, but not with Trump's quirks and style such as posting on Truth Social or putting in place punitive tariffs or demanding Greenland. Rather DeSantis would have governed as a Republican, cutting taxes, enforcing immigration laws, etc., how would the public view his administration a year into his term with the midterms looming in 2026? Would his approval be higher than Trump's? Would the left be as opposed to DeSantis? Would the GOP have a much better chance of holding onto to Congressional power in 2026?
What are your thoughts on how a year of DeSantis would compare with what we have had with Trump?

  • Bureaucrats’ Political Donations Hint Census Bureau Overcounting for Democrats May Not Be Coincidental
Are they actually going to vote on something real?

Undercounting the population in red states like Texas and Florida in 2020 cost Republicans at least six seats in the House of Representatives, while overcounting in blue states like California and New York contributed to 18 new Democratic seats, according to Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas.

“In 2020, the Census Bureau undercounted in primarily deep-red states like Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas, all red, while overcounting in radical blue states like Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, and Rhode Island,” Hunt told a Nov. 19, 2025, hearing of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government.

“This egregious error led to many states being denied proper representation in Congress and the Electoral College. So much so that these errors costs Republicans … six seats in the House. In addition to the 2020 miscounting, including illegal immigrants in the census has improperly granted radical Left blue states 12 additional seats in the United States House of Representatives. That is a total of 18 seats gain and that is a huge problem. And those are the facts,” Hunt told the hearing.

The Census Bureau acknowledged the overcounts and the undercounts in a May 2025 report. The Census Bureau uses its population counts as the basis for determining how many House of Representatives seats are in each of the 50 states. The census counts all present individuals without distinguishing between citizens and noncitizens, meaning a higher head count gives a state more House seats, without regard to citizenship status.

It is illegal for noncitizens to vote in all federal elections, as well as the vast majority of state and local contests.

Not all of the undercounted states were red, as deep-blue Illinois was among this group, while not all of the overcounted states were blue. Ohio and Utah, both red states, were among the over-counted group, according to the census report.

Most congressional Republicans, like Hunt, support requiring Census Bureau counters to at least include a question about the citizenship of every counted individual, while most congressional Democrats oppose such a requirement. The issue has intensified in recent years, especially during the Biden administration’s open-border era in which millions of illegal immigrants crossed into the U.S.

Legislation originally introduced in the House of Representatives in 2025 by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas—the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act—requires proof of citizenship when registering to vote and provides criminal penalties for violations. The measure, which has 110 House co-sponsors, including Hunt, passed the lower chamber but has not been acted upon by the Senate. President Donald Trump supports the measure.

Hunt did not address the issue of whether political bias within the Census Bureau’s workforce could be a factor in the significant undercounting and overcounting, but The Washington Stand’s review of Federal Election Commission campaign contribution data for the years 2023, 2024, and 2025 found a huge bias in favor of Democrats among donors who said they work for the agency.

Bureaucrats’ Political Donations Hint Census Bureau Overcounting for Democrats May Not Be Coincidental Are they actually going to vote on something real?
