Abdul El-Sayed was only 32 when he first ran for office in 2018, facing off against Gretchen Whitmer and Shri Thanedar in the Michigan governor’s race. With a background as a public health official, he was a relative unknown to most voters. But by the time the primary election day rolled around, El-Sayed had surged in the polls, claiming just under a third of the vote.

His candidacy was defined by a progressive vision for America, centered on healthcare, public education, and fighting poverty—and bolstered by an endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders. Now, eight years later, El-Sayed will be on the ballot again in 2026 in the primary for Michigan’s Senate seat.

Like in 2018, El-Sayed is one of several Democratic candidates, along with Representative Haley Stevens and state Senator Mallory McMorrow, vying to represent the party in November’s general election. Stevens, who has received support from the party establishment, is by far the most conservative, and McMorrow, whose policies fall somewhere in between Stevens and El-Sayed, is a rising star in her own right. While polling results show Stevens ahead, anything could happen with much of the race yet to come.

The election comes at a moment when the Democratic Party is debating its identity, and El-Sayed is primed for a breakout moment. Unabashed on his stance about Palestine, ICE, Medicare for All, and getting corporate money out of politics, he has fired up a younger voter base in Michigan. Those issues, after all, are what made him so compelling to voters the last time around.

“He’s the most person-forward and the least corporation-forward,” said Elisabeth Beer, a senior at the University of Michigan. Beer learned about El-Sayed through a friend and has since been collecting petition signatures for the candidate. Like …

  • Daily Signal Reporter Discusses White House’s AI Divide With Steve Bannon
    Who benefits from this decision?

“AI is one of the most consequential issues, right now, in the White House,” The Daily Signal’s White House Correspondent Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell said in an interview with former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.

“We have four coalitions here competing for the president’s attention,” starting with the tech accelerationist coalition, Mitchell explained to Bannon during an appearance Monday on “War Room” on Real America’s Voice.

She noted that the Big Tech coalition, led by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, want the president to quickly increase artificial intelligence development.

“Then we have three coalitions that are united against the tech accelerationists,” she said.

The populist coalition is focused on protecting jobs and rebuilding the manufacturing base, and is concerned about the potential for AI to replace jobs.

The national security coalition, she said, is concerned about the threat of Chinese influence in artificial intelligence.

The pro-family coalition, meanwhile, “is concerned about the suicides we’re seeing, AI convincing kids online, deep-fake porn we’re seeing being created by AI that is a danger to kids.”

Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell: Inside the ‘Most Controversial Issue’ in Trump Administration: AI Policy @TheElizMitchell
    — Bannon’s WarRoom (@Bannons_WarRoom) January 19, 2026

Bannon called this debate over AI “by far the most vicious and probably most important fight I’ve seen in Washington.”

“It’s galvanized everybody,” he added, but it has, thus far, flown under the public radar.

“I think as we move closer to more and more people being replaced by AI, more people are going to wake up and say, ‘Hey, I’m about to lose my job because of AI, and I want the administration, I want Congress, the government to do something about this,’” Mitchell said.

While Big Tech is already pouring money into fighting AI regulations, Mitchell says pro-family groups are pushing back.

“It’s a really big battle that’s happening here to protect kids on the pro-family side,” she said.

“And I think that’s an argument the whole country will be sympathetic to, which is that we’ve seen how kids have been endangered and harmed by social media … and we’re likely to see a similar situation that’s already begun with AI.”

Most graduating college seniors in America are in high spirits this month as they prepare for cap-and-gown ceremonies and extended family celebrations. But for Kelly Neidert, a firebrand campus conservative and marketing major at the University of North Texas in Denton, commencement is no ordinary rite of passage filled with joy and laughter.

Having faced escalating threats and intimidation from a profane and godless student mob of intolerant liberals over the past two years, Kelly told me she is “hesitant” to receive her diploma on May 13. A woke vigilante, caught on security camera video, stalked her off-campus apartment and spraypainted the phrase “Stay home Nazi C—-” on her door. After a Daily Beast hit piece against her and her conservative twin brother, “leftists started trying to go after my parents. One leftist twitter account posted a satellite image of my parent’s house, while others tried to get them fired.” A petition signed by more than 20,000 loons has called on the university to expel Kelly for her campus …

  • Trump Disinvites Nation From Board of Peace
    How is this acceptable?

President Donald Trump has revoked his invitation to Canada to join his new Board of Peace overseeing Gaza.

“Dear Prime Minister Carney,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday, “Please let this Letter serve to represent that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation to you regarding Canada’s joining, what will be, the most prestigious Board of Leaders ever assembled, at any time.”

The Board of Peace was initially announced as a body of world leaders that would help facilitate peace and new leadership in Gaza following the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

However, Trump has indicated the board may play a larger role in global affairs.

“I think we can spread out to other things as we succeed with Gaza, we’re going to be very successful in Gaza,” Trump said Thursday.

“We can do numerous other things. Once this board is completely formed, we can do pretty much whatever we want to do.”

Trump will chair the board, and appointed leaders include U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff.

So far, leaders in 20 nations have agreed to join the board, including Albania, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Belarus, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Mongolia, Morocco, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.

No other permanent member of the United Nations Security Council has yet agreed to join the board, Reuters reported, with critics of the plan alleging it could undermine the work of the U.N.

Permanent board members must each provide $1 billion in funding, according to Trump.

Trump’s decision to revoke Canada’s invitation follows public controversy between Trump and Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney.

Carney delivered a speech to global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday implying that the U.S. was at the center of a “rupture” in the world order.

Then, on Wednesday, Trump delivered a speech at the large event of global leaders and addressed Carney directly.

“Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements,” Trump said.

  • Trump approves emergency aid for 10 states ahead of winter storm

President Donald Trump has surged emergency aid and resources to 10 states shortly before a winter storm is set to hit much of the Northeast and parts of the South.

“I have just approved Emergency Declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia. We are working closely with FEMA, Governors, and State Emergency Management teams to ensure the safety of everybody. Stay Safe, and Stay Warm!” he posted on Truth Social on Saturday.

The federal aid comes after at least 21 states declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, which has been dubbed “Winter Storm Fern.” Those include most of the states Trump mentioned, as well as Alabama, Delaware, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser also declared a state of emergency on Friday.

The storm has already hit parts of the southcentral United States, with snow and ice in New Mexico and northern Texas. Widespread power outages were reported in both Texas and Louisiana as a result.

It is moving eastward and is expected to batter the Southeast and Northeast with heavy snow and ice accumulation late Saturday into Sunday. Washington, D.C., alone, is set to be hit with anywhere from 5 inches to 12 inches of snowfall.

NOEM TELLS AMERICANS TO STAY ‘ALERT’ AHEAD OF MASSIVE WEEKEND SNOW STORM

Officials have been urging the nearly 200 million people affected by the winter storm to stay home for the weekend.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem released a video address on Friday telling the public to “stay ready, stay alert, and prepare accordingly.”

  • Trump to skip Super Bowl in California, criticizes performers Bad Bunny and Green Day
    This affects the entire country.

President Donald Trump on Saturday said he plans to skip next month's Super Bowl, slamming the halftime performers and griping that the California game is too far away.
Trump, who attended last year’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans, told the New York Post: "It’s just too far away. I would, I’ve [gotten] great hands [at] the Super Bowl. They like me."
This year’s Super Bowl will be held at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, near San Jose.
He added, "I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter."

The president has also been openly critical of headline performer Bad Bunny since he was chosen last year to perform at the Halftime Show.
"I don’t know who he is," Trump told Newsmax of the choice last fall. "I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous."
Rock band Green Day was also selected in the last week to play before the kickoff.
KRISTI NOEM TORCHES NFL AS 'WEAK,' VOWS ICE WILL SHOW UP AT SUPER BOWL AMID BAD BUNNY SCANDAL
Bad Bunny and Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong are both liberal performers who have been vocal about their dislike of Trump in the past.
Bad Bunny said last fall that he decided to do his residency show in his native Puerto Rico and didn't book any U.S. dates on his tour over fears his fans would be detained by ICE agents.
"But there was the issue of, like, f---ing ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about," the Latin pop star, who has a large Latino following, told i-D.
The 31-year-old also featured a person doing a Trump impression in his song "Nuevayol," saying, "I want to apologize to the immigrants in America. . . . This country is nothing without the immigrants. This country is nothing without Mexicans, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Cubans."
Armstrong has likened Trump to Hitler in the past and the band frequently changes the line "I’m not part of a redneck agenda" from their 2004 hit "American Idiot" to "I’m not part of the MAGA agenda" in more recent live performances, according to The Independent.
"I’m anti-them," Trump told the Post of the performers. "I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible."
Kendrick Lamar headlined last year’s Halftime Show and SZA, Jon Batiste, Lauren Daigle, Trombone Shorty, and Ledisi also performed.

  • Bondi blames Minneapolis leaders after armed suspect is killed, unrest erupts during ICE operation
    Who's accountable for the results?

Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Minneapolis and Minnesota leaders of fueling unrest after a Border Patrol-involved shooting left an armed suspect dead during a targeted immigration enforcement operation.
Bondi told Fox News Saturday that sanctuary-style policies and rhetoric against federal agents have undermined public safety.
Bondi made the remarks during a live interview with Fox News anchor Aishah Hasnie, hours after federal authorities said a Border Patrol (CBP) agent fatally shot a man armed with a handgun during an enforcement operation in south Minneapolis.
ILHAN OMAR ACCUSES NOEM OF 'LIES AND PROPAGANDA' ON MINNESOTA ARRESTS
The shooting was followed by protests and crowd-control measures as demonstrators converged.
According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), agents were conducting a targeted operation against an illegal immigrant wanted for violent assault when an individual approached officers armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.
Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino said agents attempted to disarm the man, but he violently resisted.
"Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, a Border Patrol agent fired defensive shots," Bovino said.
Authorities said the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Bovino said the suspect was carrying two loaded magazines and no accessible identification, describing him as appearing intent on causing "maximum damage" to law enforcement.
MINNESOTA POLICE CHIEFS ALLEGE SOME ICE AGENTS RACIALLY PROFILED US CITIZENS, INCLUDING OFF-DUTY OFFICERS
Bondi placed responsibility for the unrest on Minnesota’s political leadership.
"This has happened in Minneapolis because you have a mayor and a governor who have declared Minneapolis a sanctuary city," Bondi said. "You’re invited here. We will protect you."
She said ICE agents operating in the city have arrested individuals accused or convicted of serious crimes, arguing enforcement was necessary to protect people.
TRUMP URGES DHS, ICE TO PUBLICIZE ARRESTS, SAYS CRACKDOWN IS 'SAVING MANY INNOCENT LIVES'
"And that’s why Donald Trump has ICE in Minneapolis, to protect the citizens," Bondi said.
Bondi described the protests as "extremely organized," noting the appearance of matching signs and gas masks.
"It’s extremely organized," she said. "The signs they have are all matching. They’re well written. How did these people go out and get gas masks?"
During the interview, Bondi confirmed federal grand jury subpoenas had been issued to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Attorney General Keith Ellison and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, though she declined …

Bondi blames Minneapolis leaders after suspect DHS officials say was armed is killed by CBP, igniting unrest Who's accountable for the results? Attorney General Pam Bondi accused Minneapolis and Minnesota leaders of fueling unrest after a Border Patrol-involved shooting left an allegedly armed suspect dead during a targeted immigration enforcement operation. Bondi told Fox News Saturday that sanctuary-style policies and rhetoric against federal agents have undermined public safety. Bondi made the remarks during a live interview with Fox News anchor Aishah Hasnie, hours after federal authorities said a Border Patrol (CBP) agent fatally shot a man DHS officials say was armed with a handgun during an enforcement operation in south Minneapolis. • AG Bondi demands access to Minnesota voter rolls after fatal Border Patrol shooting
    Confidence requires clarity.

Following the chaotic and tragic murder of 37-year-old Alex Pretti at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis, U.S Attorney General Pam Bondi drafted a letter to Gov. Tim Walz, in which she requests access to detailed voter rolls, under the guise of election security.
Third, allow the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice to access voter rolls to confirm that Minnesota’s voter registration practices comply with federal law as authorized by the Civil Rights Act of 1960. Fulfilling this common sense request will better guarantee free and fair elections and boost confidence in the rule of law.

The full letter to Walz, which can be found here, lies the blame for these violent incidents at the past weeks at the hands of Minnesota local and state officials.
The letter makes no reference to either the shooting of Renee Good, or the shooting of Alex Pretti.
    Starter Questions:
Why do you believe AG Bondi wants access to Minnesota voting records?
Do you believe the DoJ will carry out an investigation into the agent(s) responsible for the incident?
Who, in your opinion, is more to blame for the rhetoric and now violence in Minneapolis? The Trump administration and Republican officials, or local activists and Democrats?

  • Senate Dems revolt against DHS funding bill amid Minneapolis chaos, hiking government shutdown risk
    What's the endgame here?

Senate Democrats are ready to break a fragile truce that would avert a partial government shutdown after a Minneapolis man was fatally shot by a border patrol agent on Saturday.
Congressional Democrats were already leery of backing funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the wake of the agency’s presence in Minnesota and beyond, but the shooting of 37-year-old Alex Pretti during an immigration enforcement operation has shattered what little unity they had on the bill.
Now, Senate Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., plan to vote against the legislation, which is currently included in a broader funding package along with five other spending bills.
SENATE DEMOCRATS REBEL AGAINST THEIR OWN LEADERSHIP OVER DHS FUNDING PACKAGE, INCREASING SHUTDOWN ODDS
Schumer, in a statement on Saturday, said that Democrats tried to get "common sense reforms" in the DHS funding bill, but charged that "because of Republicans’ refusal to stand up to President Trump, the DHS bill is woefully inadequate to rein in the abuses" of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
"I will vote no," Schumer said. "Senate Democrats will not provide the votes to proceed to the appropriations bill if the DHS funding bill is included."
Schumer’s play call serves as a blow to Senate Republicans, who worked with their colleagues across the aisle to find compromises in the DHS bill, in particular. It also comes as the deadline to fund the government is rapidly approaching on Friday, Jan. 30. Further complicating matters is the arctic storm ripping across the country, which has already forced the upper chamber to cancel votes on Monday.
A senior Senate aide told Fox News Digital that Senate Democrats had been for weeks saying that they weren’t interested in shutting the government down again, and had praised the bipartisan nature of the government funding process up until Saturday.
"These bills were negotiated with Dems — they agreed to what’s in them," they said.

The agency would be fully funded in the current proposal with several restrictions and reporting requirements that if not met, would act as triggers to turn off certain cash flows.
Ripping the bill from the current six-bill funding package would cause a domino effect of headaches in Congress, given that any changes to the package would have to go through the House.
The lower chamber is gone until Feb. 2, making the likelihood of a partial shutdown much higher.
